How did a post-punk band from Manchester become one of the most iconic cultural expressions of our time? And what does Anton Corbijn’s camera lens have to do with it? Welcome to an evening that explores the music, imagery, and myth of Joy Division – the band that defined a generation and shaped Corbijn’s raw, monochrome aesthetic.
ON-STAGE CONVERSATION: FREDRIK STRAGE & LARS SUNDESTRAND
Music journalist Fredrik Strage leads a deep dive into the legacy of Joy Division, joined by photographer Lars Sundestrand – who travelled to England in 1980 to meet the band. Lars shares stories of that encounter, the music, and the images that have stayed with him ever since. With a career spanning everyone from Ebba Grön to David Bowie, he offers rare insights into how a photograph can shape a musical legacy.
FILM SCREENING: CONTROL BY ANTON CORBIJN
Following the talk, we screen Control – Anton Corbijn’s critically acclaimed feature film debut. This visually powerful portrait of lead singer Ian Curtis is based on the memoir Touching from a Distance by his widow, Deborah Curtis. A haunting story of talent, anxiety, and unforgettable music – told in the grainy black-and-white light that became Corbijn’s signature style.
