About the book

The publication Not A Typical Persian Girl, with the same title as the current exhibition at Fotografiska, combines artistic work, archival material, and research, tracing feminist movements from 1850 to today. Structured through thematic chapters, it weaves together historical context, interviews, and visual material, connecting past and present through both art and lived experience. The second edition expands the first with a broader visual archive and spans 250 pages. Published in English and Farsi, it brings together voices from women and non-binary individuals in Iran and the diaspora.

About the artists

Farahmand and Hagberg are known for their multidisciplinary approach, working across performance, photographic storytelling, and installation, grounded in long-term artistic research on women’s history in Iran. They are currently presenting Not A Typical Persian Girl as part of the Emerging Artists program at Fotografiska.

About the moderator

Karolina Modig is a journalist, editor, author and founder of artnotes.se. She writes about art and culture for publications including Dagens Nyheter and Konstnären, is the editor of ICON Magazine, and works as a book editor for institutions such as the Public Art Agency Sweden, Moderna Museet and Göteborg Konst. She is the author of Värdet av konst (2025) and Häng konsten lågt (2015).
