About Lotta Antonsson

On 25 April, Fotografiska opens a new exhibition by Lotta Antonsson, a central figure in Swedish contemporary photography who, since her breakthrough three decades ago, has explored questions of the gaze, power, and objectification. Working with an expanded approach to photography, Antonsson draws from a personal archive of vintage magazines—primarily from the 1960s and 1970s—to examine how women’s bodies have been represented, desired, and consumed.

Through analogue processes, she reshapes the visual language that has historically framed femininity, combining photography, collage, and objects such as shells and crystals in carefully choreographed installations. As bodies, eyes, and faces are obscured or fragmented, a charged ambiguity emerges in which the familiar becomes both seductive and unsettling.
